Short answer: The mistakes that hurt contractor rankings most are structural: all your services crammed on one page, no pages for the towns you serve, slow loading on phones, missing titles, and business details that do not match your Google profile. Most are fixable in days, not months.
A website can look great and still be nearly invisible to Google. Search engines read structure, not style. Here are the mistakes we see most often on contractor sites, roughly in order of how much they cost.
1. One page for every service
If roof repair, roof replacement, gutters, and siding all live on one “Services” page, Google has one page to rank for dozens of different searches. It usually ranks for none of them.
Give each main service its own page with its own title, description, photos, and FAQs.
2. No pages for the towns you serve
Searches like “roofer Shrewsbury MA” need a page that is genuinely about working in Shrewsbury. A single line saying “we serve Central Mass” is not enough. See how to handle multiple service areas.
3. Missing or duplicate page titles
Every page needs a unique title that names the service and the area, like “Roof Replacement in Worcester, MA | Smith Roofing.” Many sites use “Home” or the business name on every page, which wastes the strongest signal on the page.
4. Slow pages on mobile
Huge photos, sliders, and too many plugins make pages slow on phones. Slow pages lose visitors and can be at a disadvantage in search. Compress images, remove what you do not need, and test on a real phone.
5. Details that do not match your Google profile
Your business name, phone, and address should be identical on your website and Google Business Profile. A different phone number or an old address creates doubt for both Google and customers.
6. Thin, generic content
Pages that say “We provide quality service at competitive prices” could belong to any contractor anywhere. Specifics rank and convert: what the job involves, how long it takes, typical price ranges, the materials you use, and photos of real projects.
7. Blocking Google by accident
A setting left on from development, like “discourage search engines from indexing this site” in WordPress, can keep your entire site out of Google. Check it, and confirm your site appears in Google Search Console.
8. No internal links
Pages that are not linked from anywhere else on the site are hard for Google to find and easy for visitors to miss. Link from your homepage to every main service, and between related services and towns.
A quick self-check
- Does every main service have its own page?
- Does every page have a unique title naming the service and area?
- Does the homepage load in a few seconds on your phone, on mobile data?
- Do your name, phone, and address match your Google Business Profile exactly?
- Can you reach every service page within one or two clicks from the homepage?
Every “no” on this list is a fix worth making before spending more on marketing.
Where to start
Fix the first three mistakes before anything else. They have the biggest impact and are usually quick. For the visitor side of the same problem, read how to tell if your website is costing you business.
