Short answer: To show up in Google Maps you need a verified Google Business Profile with the right category, an accurate service area, and consistent details across the web. Showing up at all is step one. Showing up near the top takes reviews, a complete profile, and a website that supports it.
When someone searches “electrician near me,” Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. For many contractors, that map is where most new calls come from.
Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Go to Google Business Profile and search for your business. If it already exists, claim it. If not, create it. Then complete verification, which can involve a video, a phone or text code, or another method Google chooses.
Until your profile is verified, it will not reliably show in Maps.
Step 2: Set it up as a service-area business
Most contractors go to the customer. If customers do not visit your address, hide it and set a service area of the towns you serve. If you have a showroom or office customers visit, show the address and set the hours it is staffed.
Step 3: Choose the right category
Your primary category tells Google which searches you belong in. Pick the most specific match, like “Plumber,” “Roofing contractor,” or “Electrician,” then add secondary categories for other real services.
Step 4: Fill in everything else
Services, description, hours, phone, website, photos, and attributes. A complete profile gives Google more reasons to show you. Use our checklist on what information to put on your Google Business Page.
Step 5: Make your details consistent everywhere
Your business name, phone, and address should match exactly on your website, Facebook, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, the BBB, and trade directories. Mismatches make Google less certain about your business.
Step 6: Build prominence
- Ask every customer for a review, and reply to each one.
- Add photos of recent jobs every week.
- Build a page on your website for each main service and important town.
- Get listed with local associations, suppliers, and chambers of commerce.
Showing up is easy. Ranking in the top three takes these signals. We explain how ranking works in why some contractors rank higher than others.
How long it takes to appear
A newly verified profile can start appearing in Maps within days, but usually for your business name and very nearby searches first. Showing up for broader searches like “roofer near me” across your service area takes longer, often weeks to months, as reviews, photos, and website signals build.
Keep going during that time. The profiles that rank best are usually the ones that kept adding reviews and photos week after week, long after setup.
If you still do not show up
- Search your exact business name. If nothing appears, the profile may be unverified or suspended.
- Check for a duplicate listing that splits your reviews and details.
- Make sure your name follows Google’s guidelines, with no added keywords.
- Remember results depend on where the searcher is. You may show in one town and not another.
