Short answer: AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity recommend local businesses based on what they can find and trust across the web: your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent listings, clear service pages, and mentions on other sites. Strengthen those, and you are far more likely to be the business they name.
Customers are starting to ask, “Who is a good roofer in Worcester?” instead of typing “roofer Worcester” into Google. The answer they get is a short list, not ten blue links.
There is no secret switch to get on that list. But the businesses that show up tend to have the same things in common.
Where AI tools get their information
AI assistants pull from search engines, business listings, review sites, and pages that mention you. Google’s AI uses Google’s own index and Business Profiles. ChatGPT’s web search draws on other search indexes and sources across the web.
In other words, AI search is built on regular search. The basics still matter most.
1. Make your Google Business Profile complete
Your profile is one of the strongest local signals there is. Fill in every field, choose the most precise categories, list every service individually, and keep adding photos. Our guide on optimizing your Google Business Profile walks through it.
2. Keep your business info identical everywhere
Your name, address, phone number, and website should match exactly on Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook, and local directories. Conflicting details make it harder for any system to trust which version is right.
3. Earn reviews that say what you do
AI tools summarize reviews. A review that says “they replaced our furnace in Shrewsbury the same day” tells them what you do and where, far better than “great service.”
Ask happy customers to mention the job and the town in their own words.
4. Answer real questions on your website
AI answers are built from clear, direct statements. Pages that answer specific questions, like what a service costs, how long it takes, and which towns you cover, are easier to quote.
- Put a short, direct answer at the top of each page.
- Have a dedicated page for each main service.
- Add an FAQ section with the questions customers really ask.
- Use structured data (schema) so search engines understand your business, services, and area.
5. Get mentioned on other sites
Being named on local news sites, chamber of commerce pages, supplier sites, and community forums gives AI tools independent confirmation that you exist and are trusted locally.
What not to waste time on
Because AI search is new, there is a lot of noise about shortcuts. Most of them do not hold up.
- Stuffing pages with “best roofer in Worcester” phrases. Clear, helpful answers beat repeated keywords.
- Buying fake reviews. Platforms remove them, and they can get your profile suspended.
- Creating dozens of thin location pages that say the same thing. One genuine page per real service area works better.
- Paying for “AI ranking” services that cannot explain exactly what they change.
The fundamentals that help you rank on Google are the same ones that get you named by AI. There is no separate trick.
How to check where you stand
Ask ChatGPT, Google, and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask, such as “best electrician in Worcester MA.” Note who shows up, then look at what those businesses have that you do not: more reviews, clearer pages, or more mentions.
