Website vs. Google Business Page: What’s the Difference?

Website vs. Google Business Page: What’s the Difference?

Short answer: your Google Business Profile is a free listing that lives on Google and gets you found in local search and Maps. Your website is property you own that gets you chosen once you’ve been found. They do different jobs, and neither one replaces the other.

This confusion costs contractors real money in both directions β€” some pay for a website and never touch their free Google listing, others assume the free listing is all they need and lose the searches it can’t reach. So here’s the plain distinction.

What a Google Business Profile actually is

It’s a free listing you claim from Google. When someone searches your business name, that panel on the right with your hours, phone, photos, and reviews? That’s it. When someone searches “electrician near me” and gets a map with three businesses? That’s it again.

What it does well:

What it can’t do:

What a website actually is

It’s a set of pages on a domain you own and control. Nobody can change it or take it down but you.

What it does well:

What it can’t do:

The clearest way to think about it

Your Google Business Profile is how people find you. Your website is how people decide on you.

Watch how a homeowner actually behaves. They search “roof repair near me.” The map pack shows three companies. They tap one, glance at the reviews, then tap through to the website to see whether this outfit looks like it can handle their job. Then they call.

Cut the profile and they never see you. Cut the website and they see you, get uncertain, and call the next one.

They also feed each other

This is the part people miss. The two aren’t parallel β€” they reinforce each other.

Your profile links to your website, sending real visitors to it. Your website confirms the details on your profile, which supports Google’s confidence that your business information is accurate. Reviews on your profile can be displayed on your site as proof. Location pages on your site support your relevance for the towns you serve.

Run one without the other and you’re leaving the connection unused.

Which comes first?

Start with the Google Business Profile. It’s free, it takes an afternoon, and for a lot of local searches it’s the thing that’s actually visible. If you have nothing else, have this β€” complete, accurate, with photos and a real flow of reviews.

Add the website once you’re ready to grow. The moment you want work that isn’t coming from repeat customers and referrals, you need something that closes strangers and something that ranks in the results the map pack doesn’t cover.

What about Facebook?

Same category as your Google profile: a page on someone else’s platform, useful, not yours. It’s a fine place to post finished jobs and stay visible to past customers. It is not a substitute for a website, and it carries much less weight than your Google profile for someone actively searching for a contractor right now.
